City of Manson Water Connection to Fort Dodge Water FAQs

The City of Manson and Graff Excavating are wrapping up the water connection project! Thank you for your patience as we finish this important project!

When will Manson begin receiving Fort Dodge water?

The connection is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, June 24, 2026. Water from Fort Dodge will gradually enter Manson’s distribution system and water tower.

Is the water safe to drink and use?

Yes. The water remains safe to drink and use for everyday household needs. The city monitors the water daily and will notify you if a boil order is required.

Why does the water look or smell different?

When a water source changes, minerals in the pipes can be stirred up. This may cause temporary changes in taste, smell, or color. This does not mean the water is unsafe.

What should I do if my water looks discolored?

Run your water for several minutes until it clears. This may need to be done at more than one faucet.

How long will this last?

Most homes will notice improvements within a few days as the system stabilizes.

Will this affect my appliances or water softener?

Temporary discoloration should not harm appliances. You may wish to wait to wash white laundry until water runs clear.

Will there be shutoffs or pressure changes?

Some residents may notice brief pressure fluctuations as the connection is completed.

What disinfectant will be used?

Manson’s previous water supply used free chlorine for disinfection. As we transition to Fort Dodge water, the system will switch to chloramines.

Chloramines are formed by combining chlorine with a small amount of ammonia. Like free chlorine, they are used to disinfect water and protect against bacteria and other harmful organisms, and they are approved by the EPA and commonly used in many Iowa communities.

Chloramines stay active in the distribution system longer than free chlorine, which helps maintain water quality as it travels through pipes and storage tanks.

Because chloramines work differently than free chlorine, some residents may notice small changes in taste or odor. These changes are normal and do not affect the safety of the water.

Do I need to install a water softener?

Not necessarily. The water will be somewhat harder than Manson’s previous water source, but many Iowa communities use water with similar hardness levels (many IA towns are much harder). Residents are encouraged to wait and see how the new water works for their household before investing in softeners.

Will chloramine affect fish or aquariums?

Possibly. Fish owners should make sure any water treatment products they use are designed to remove chloramines, as standard chlorine treatments may not be sufficient.

What about home dialysis users?

Individuals using home dialysis equipment should consult their healthcare provider or equipment manufacturer to ensure their equipment is properly treating chloraminated water.

When should I contact City Hall?

We kindly ask residents to allow time for the system to stabilize and run their water if needed before contacting City Hall. Only if you experience a prolonged issue that does not resolve, contact City Hall.

City of Manson Public Hearing – Water Revenue Capital Loan Note for 2025

PUBLIC NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that The City Council of the City of Manson, State of Iowa will meet April 23, 2025 at 6:00 PM at City Hall, 1015 13th Street, Manson, IA 50563. The tentative agenda for the meeting is as follows: $6,755,000 Water Revenue Capital Loan Notes, Series 2025A. Approve form of Tax Exemption Certificate. Resolution approving and authorizing a form of Loan and Disbursement Agreement by and between the City of Manson, Iowa, and the Iowa Finance Authority, and authorizing and providing for the issuance and securing the payment of $6,755,000 Water Revenue Capital Loan Notes, Series 2025A, of the City of Manson, Iowa, under the provisions of the Code of Iowa, and providing for a method of payment of said Notes. This notice is given at the direction of the Mayor pursuant to Chapter 21, Code of Iowa, and the local rules of the governmental body.

WATER BILLING – ONLINE PAYMENTS

The City of Manson has moved to a safe and convenient cloud-based water billing system with the same company, gWorks. With this upgrade, you now have the opportunity to view or pay your bill online! You can enroll in autopay, get electronic bills, and manage your account 24/7 online. If you were previously enrolled in auto pay through the city, you must re-enroll.  We are excited to be able to provide this convenience to the Manson community!

Please note the following changes that may occur:

• Payment due dates & penalty dates may fluctuate slightly depending on when bills are posted. We will do our best to keep it as close to those dates as possible! Since payments are now also online, as soon as bills are posted, they will be immediately applied to the online accounts. This will take place the last week of the month.
• If you are signed up for auto pay, you will NOT get a paper bill unless you make that change in your online account. You can always go in and view your account balance and print any paid invoices.
  
  Online Processing Fees
• Credit/Debit Card Charges: 2.49% plus $1.00 per transaction with a $2 minimum
• ACH Pass-through processing fees: $1.30 per transaction
  *These fees will not appear on your utility bill amount. These are fees associated with the online payment processing system- not the City of Manson. 

CRATER DAYS

Crater Days, Manson’s annual city wide celebration is held the last full week end in June.  This annual celebration was established in 1980 as a community celebration following a devastating F4 tornado in 1979 that swept a path of destruction through the center of Manson.  Highlights of the celebration includes a truck and semi pull, parade, golf tournament,  a variety of community activities for all ages, and national recording artists performing live music at “Crash my Crater”.

This hometown weekend celebration traditional hosts class reunions and family celebrations providing the perfect atmosphere to reconnect with family and friends.
